If you want women to perceive you as a macho guy who radiates masculinity, make like Terry Crews and swipe on some Old Spice (or any of the 15 best deodorants for men). Seriously. Women find men more manly when they wear deodorant, according to research from the University of Stirling.
In the strange but intriguing study, researchers had both female and male participants rate the masculinity and femininity of men and women using photographs and odor samples (before and after applying deodorant) to see how scent hurts or helps attractiveness.
All women who were wearing deodorant were rated as more feminine by men compared to women who went bare. Women were more sensitive to odor, however.
Men who ranked low in facial masculinity were perceived as more confident after they applied deodorant. The results were so significant that once deodorant was applied, the high- and low-ranking facial masculinity groups of men became practically indistinguishable. Sorry, if you're already a stud. Deodorant won't amplify your manliness; this is only the case for not-so-manly guys.
"This means that men are able to use deodorant to artificially raise their game so to speak, levelling the playing field by making themselves comparable, at least as far as odour is concerned, to more masculine men," lead researcher Caroline Allen, Ph.D., said in a press release.
