Hedge fund guys do CrossFit. So do cops. And construction workers, engineers, and professors. (Even rock stars, too!) Here are their stories.
Joanna Wood, 29, is a Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada-based gym owner.
I met Kevin in 2010, then started doing CrossFit shortly afterward. He owned a CrossFit gym and I was curious to try it.
Although I was on the small side, it turned out I was strong for my size. Now the barbell is my best friend. I got my CrossFit trainer certification that August, and we started working together. On December 24, in the last little window of my chocolate Advent calendar, there was a wedding ring.
Kevin and I always knew we wouldn’t be having a traditional wedding. We joked around about making it into an exercise routine, and it sort of evolved from there.
We had real kettlebell centerpieces at the tables and bumper plates with barbells wrapped in lace in the corners of the reception room. I used a box-jump box to kiss the groom at eye level. We had a kettlebell cake made. Instead of a first dance, we had our first workout—front squats, skipping (fun in a dress), and box jumps. Most of the people at our wedding were CrossFitters, so instead of having people clink their glasses to get us to kiss, we had each table complete a different exercise. Having our mothers doing burpees in their dresses was pretty memorable. –As told to David Wescott
